🟡 Beat the heat with $1 kids movies in Gastonia

Plus... Gastonia’s Sunflower Festival is in full bloom, Mount Holly celebrates Christmas in July, and Belmont’s Banana Bar shines on WBTV!

It’s a tale of two Martys this week. One we know, and one we don’t. One from the past (and the future), and one arriving soon.

Tonight, the Gastonia Ghostpeppers are putting Marty McFly in the spotlight with a postgame showing of Back to the Future—the 1985 classic that made time travel cool and introduced us to a kid with a skateboard and some interesting family dynamics.

Meanwhile, just a few blocks away in downtown Gastonia, a sign hangs from a storefront—the former home of Cool Beans Cat Café. It reads only one word: Marty’s.

And with that simple sign, the speculation begins. Who is this Marty? What’s it going to be?

I haven’t known many Martys in my life. There was Marty Rankin—my sister’s best friend’s brother growing up. Not sure what happened to him, but he was the first.

There are some famous Martys, of course. NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer. Country legends Marty Stuart and Marty Robbins.

But the one that’s always stuck with me is Marty McFly—the teenager who accidentally traveled from 1985 to 1955 in a DeLorean. We know how his story ends. Still, it’s worth revisiting now and then. (Like tonight at CaroMont Health Park!)

As for this new Marty—we wait. We wonder. We speculate. Who will this Marty be? What’s he (or she) all about?

If only we had a DeLorean to find out. But maybe the anticipation is half the fun.

I guess knowing the answer doesn’t matter. Because where we’re going, we don’t need answers. Just a good story.

Welcome to Gastonia, Martys.

Thanks for reading!

Ben
