Summer Can Stay a Little Longer
It’s hot. It’s dog-days-of-summer hot. It’s so hot that yesterday was the first day since school let out that my wife, Jillian, announced she was officially over it.
Now, before anyone sends me a calendar, let me explain what "summer" means around our house.
Summer doesn't start on June 21. Summer starts the minute the last school bell rings. That's summer vacation. The days get longer, the schedule gets looser, bedtime becomes more of a suggestion than a rule, and somehow every evening our conversation ends with, “Y'all going to the pool tomorrow?”
My wife has never met a pool she didn't like. Big pools, little pools, kiddie pools, inflatable pools. If it holds water, she's in it. As summer approaches, she practically counts down the days until she can combine sunshine, heat and chlorine.
Which is why I was surprised when she declared she'd had enough.
Then she told me she'd already seen Halloween decorations in the stores. Really? In early July?
I haven't verified that claim, but I suspect it's less about retailers and more about Jillian trying to will summer to end. Summer has barely hit its stride. We've still got another couple of months of blazing afternoons, humid evenings and complaints about how hot it is.
Before long, she'll be talking about pumpkin spice lattes with skim milk, pulling out bins of Halloween decorations and dreaming about sweater weather.
Me? I'm in no hurry.
There will be plenty of time for pumpkins and falling leaves. Right now, I like the slower pace of summer.
Long evenings. Wet towels hanging over the trampoline. A hummingbird at the feeder. Nothing much happening.
That’s my kind of summer. You can stay a little while longer.
The only thing better than fireworks is knowing where to find them. Forward them today's Hello, Gaston!
