Waiting for the Melt
Normalcy is underrated. It is not flashy. It is not sexy. It just exists. Routine is predictable. Maybe even boring at times. And honestly, that is kind of the point.
That might be what I love about a good snow. For a brief moment, the world pauses. It doesn’t last long, and quite frankly, I wish it did. Because it seems almost immediately after it falls, I start to wonder when it will melt.
Cabin fever is real. Especially with two little kids under five. The walls feel closer. Those sweet little voices get louder. The coloring books pile up. There are only so many activities you can rotate through before everyone starts to lose it.
I am grateful that my job lets me work remotely, no matter what the weather is doing outside. I know not everyone has that luxury. For some people, work does not slow down when snow and ice show up. Sometimes it ramps up.
And sure, there are perks to working from home. Less small talk. Fewer interruptions. More chances to lock in and actually get things done. No office noise. No awkward meetings.
But let me tell you what is worse than annoying coworkers.
Two kids under five bouncing off the walls while I am trying to concentrate. Constant interruptions to refill apple juice. My son yelling across the room because his YouTube video hit a commercial.
After the first winter storm, I told my wife, “This is probably what COVID felt like.”
After the most recent one, I said it again. And I meant it.
The six-year anniversary of COVID is coming up, which still feels impossible to say out loud. Back then, there was no clear end in sight. No melting point. Cabin fever with kids did not last a few days. It dragged on for months. Then years.
Thankfully, snow eventually melts. Routines return. Daycare opens back up. Life resumes.
And maybe that is why normalcy matters more than we give it credit for. Not because it is exciting, but because it is grounding. Familiar and steady.
There is an old saying: how can I miss you if you do not go away?
Well, I am saying it now. I miss you, routine. Just do me a favor and do not disappear again until it is time for vacation.
