The Storm We Didn’t Ask For
Be careful what you wish for. You just might get it.
That winter storm everyone hoped for last weekend turned out to be mostly hype. The real thing shows up in two days.
Snow? Maybe. Ice? Much more likely. Not exactly the winter wonderland anyone had in mind. Not for me either. Ice does not make good snowmen, snowballs, or snow cream.
I read online last night that black ice is the devil’s saliva. It sounds like a southern saying, but it’s not entirely wrong.
Black ice is no joke. Four-wheel drive can handle fluffy snow, but very few vehicles can grip a solid sheet of ice. Traction does not care how tough your truck looks.
If you’ve lived here long enough, you probably remember the ice storm of 2002. Meteorologist Brad Panovich calls it the Hugo of winter storms, and he’s right.
I was living in Gastonia at the time. The city shut down for nearly a week. Some areas saw up to an inch of ice. Trees fell, power lines snapped, and more than a million homes lost electricity.
You never forget something like that. I did not realize ice could do that kind of damage until I experienced it firsthand.
Weather models can only guess where the snow, ice, and rain will land. That uncertainty is just part of the deal. All we can do is prepare, stay put if we can, and hope for the best.
Stay safe out there, Gaston!
